Simpson.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by certain outlets (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/11\/23\/pet-owners-feed-cats-vegan-diet-could-face-prosecution\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-6424635\/Cat-owners-force-pets-vegan-risk-making-seriously-ill.html\">here<\/a>), the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) recently warned that feeding a house cat a vegan diet (<em>i.e.<\/em>, no meat) could violate the UK&#8217;s Animal Welfare Act.\u00a0 The RSPCA&#8217;s warning apparently came after several vendors at the National Pet Show in Birmingham in November displayed the latest in vegan pet food and non-meat pet food alternatives.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As reported, a spokesperson for the RSCPA remarked that the Animal Welfare Act &#8220;requires an owner to take reasonable steps to ensure that all the pet&#8217;s needs are met&#8221; which includes a &#8220;healthy diet.&#8221;\u00a0 Malnourishing a house cat could lead to prosecution under the law.\u00a0 \u00a0As the RSPCA spokesman was quoted as explaining, unlike dogs, which are omnivores:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cats are strict carnivores and depend on some very specific nutrients that are found in meat, including taurine, vitamin A and arachidonic acid so [they] can become seriously ill if they are fed a vegetarian or vegan diet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This statement is consistent with guidance found on the RSPCA&#8217;s website (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspca.org.uk\/adviceandwelfare\/pets\/cats\/diet\/-\/articleName\/CAD_Cat_Diet\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspca.org.uk\/adviceandwelfare\/pets\/cats\">here<\/a>) that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cats need a well-balanced <strong>meat-based diet<\/strong> to stay fit and healthy &#8212; they cannot be vegetarian.\u00a0 Make sure your cat eats a balanced diet that is suitable for their age, health status and lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cats are meat eaters.<\/strong>\u00a0 Meat is an important part of a cat&#8217;s diet.\u00a0 Eating meat is important for cats; they cannot survive without the nutrients found in animal-derived materials.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Emphasis in original).<\/p>\n<p>Thus, it would appear that, while a human may decide for herself\/himself to go vegan, the choice whether to take the family cat down the same path may be more complicated legally, at least under the UK&#8217;s Animal Welfare Act.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By John M.
