Updates Data on SARS-CoV-2 in Animals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On September 6, 2022, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture updated its &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/ourfocus\/onehealth\/one-health-sarscov2-in-animals\">dashboard<\/a>&#8221; that tracks confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 in animals in the United States.\u00a0 The data continues to show that the incidence of the COVID-19 virus in animals is quite low.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>APHIS presented the information in dashboard form as follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/animallawdevelopments\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2022\/09\/09-06-22-APHIS-Dashboard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/animallawdevelopments\/2022\/04\/14\/covid-19-in-animals-continues-to-be-minor-issue-in-u-s\/\"> last update<\/a> on April 11, 2022, the number of confirmed cases in companion and other animals in human care showed only a small increase from <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">362 to 394<\/span> cases.\u00a0 Confirmed cases in mink farms remained <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">constant at 18<\/span>.\u00a0 States with confirmed cases increased from <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">26 to 28 states.\u00a0<\/span> APHIS mapped the geographic distribution of confirmed animal cases as follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/animallawdevelopments\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2022\/09\/09-06-22-APHIS-National-Confirmed-Case-Map.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/animallawdevelopments\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2022\/09\/09-06-22-variant-list.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-491\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/animallawdevelopments\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/38\/2022\/09\/09-06-22-variant-list.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"843\" height=\"386\" 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beyond companion animals and other animals in human care, APHIS noted diagnoses had been confirmed in single animals in the following species:\u00a0 binturong, coati, cougar, ferret, fishing cat, lynx, mandrill and squirrel monkey.<\/p>\n<p>With money from the American Rescue Plan, APHIS has a number of current projects aimed at understanding SARS-CoV-2 and how it moves between people and animals.\u00a0 Two projects scheduled to start in the fall of 2022 include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000\">Development of a aptamer-based lateral flow assay that will be capable of identifying multiple virus variants in animals and that can be used to help farmers, veterinarians and regulatory agencies address and monitor SARS-CoV-2 in animals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000\">SARS-CoV-2 testing for dogs and cats and the establishment of a framework and build networks for information sharing and outreach.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>APHIS continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/ourfocus\/onehealth\/variants-faq\">observe<\/a> that, while its experts &#8220;are still learning about SARS-CoV-2 in animals . . . there is currently no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading the virus to humans.\u00a0 Based on the limited available information to date, the risk of animals spreading SARS-CoV-2 to people is low.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On September
