Robinson<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>This blog post features a Duane Morris staff member in celebration of Black History Month.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"DMBdyTxt\">Black History Month is a time to recognize and appreciate the impact of the contributions and accomplishments Black\/African Americans have made over generations.\u00a0 When factoring in the societal conditions that existed when those first black trailblazers began their journey, it makes you appreciate it even more.\u00a0 It\u2019s also not just Black history.\u00a0 It\u2019s American history.\u00a0 My hope is that someday, those histories will be joined together.\u00a0 Along with the achievements of other cultures and ethnicities as the fabric of this country and its history is woven with many different multi-colored threads.\u00a0 It all needs to be taught and celebrated equally throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"DMBdyTxt\">For me personally, I focus more on family during this time of year.\u00a0 All of my grandparents are deceased, but I still cherish and remember the stories that I heard growing up.\u00a0 Nothing glamorous\u2026just true life experience type things that they encountered and how they handled those situations and persevered through them.\u00a0 My parents also have their own stories to tell as they both grew up during the Civil Rights Movement.\u00a0 As I\u2019ve gotten older, I have realized that there\u2019s a lot of Black\/African American history outside of what can be found in textbooks or on the internet.\u00a0 There are stories that are passed down through family and friends that are just as important to how we as a people view ourselves, celebrate our culture and how we move towards making new history.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"DMBdyTxt\">When I was a kid, my little league baseball coach was a man named Bill Nutch and he was a former baseball player in the Negro Leagues.\u00a0 Back then, I was too young to realize all of the history that I had access to just being around him.\u00a0 I remember he told us a story about his team being denied a place to stay during a road game because all of the hotels and motels around that area were for whites only.\u00a0 They ended up sleeping on a bus overnight as they had a game the next day.\u00a0 He told us this before we left for our first road game and when we got to the field he gathered us around and said \u201cIf I can play funky and tired, y\u2019all don\u2019t have no excuse not to go out there and play your best\u201d.\u00a0 Spoiler alert\u2026despite the awesome attempt to motivate us, we lost the game.\u00a0 The key is that I will always remember that day and even though it wasn\u2019t a great positive moment in Black history, it\u2019s still a part of our history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"DMBdyTxt\">It\u2019s nice to reflect to see how far we\u2019ve come, but it\u2019s even better to dream about what could possibly be waiting down the road.\u00a0 Hoping that everyone gets to enjoy and learn in celebrating Black History Month!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: Rafiq J.
