{"id":112,"date":"2022-03-21T17:02:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T21:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/energyenvironmental\/?p=112"},"modified":"2022-03-21T17:02:00","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T21:02:00","slug":"north-carolina-seeks-to-face-climate-change-with-head-in-the-sand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/energyenvironmental\/2022\/03\/21\/north-carolina-seeks-to-face-climate-change-with-head-in-the-sand\/","title":{"rendered":"North Carolina Seeks to Face Climate Change with Head in the Sand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Florida\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t say gay\u201d bill\u00a0\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/1834\/BillText\/Filed\/HTML\">SB 1834<\/a>)\u00a0occupies the front pages of many media outlets today, one is reminded of an earlier (2012) state legislative exercise in prohibiting engagement with reality:\u00a0<strong>North Carolina\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t say climate change\u201d bill<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/webservices.ncleg.gov\/ViewBillDocument\/2011\/7979\/1\/H819-PCCS80412-CCSSB-6\">H819<\/a>).Unhappy with the perceived prospect of dampened economic development resulting from the state\u2019s Coastal Resources Commission estimating that the sea level would rise by 39 inches in the next century, the state legislature chose to bury the state\u2019s head in the sand. It passed a bill prohibiting the state\u2019s coastal management and environmental agencies from defining the rate of sea level rise for regulatory purposes for the next four years. (\u201cThe Coastal Resources Commission and the Division of Coastal Management of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources\u00a0<strong>shall not define rates of sea-level change for regulatory purposes prior to July 1, 2016<\/strong>.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Well, the climate didn\u2019t care. Based on a\u00a0<strong>5-year report newly released by NOAA<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/hazards\/sealevelrise\/sealevelrise-tech-report.html#step1\">full NOAA report<\/a>), the estimate generated by NC\u2019s Coastal Resources Commission has proven to be very much on target.<\/p>\n<p>To read the full text of this post by Seth v.d.H.
