{"id":1157,"date":"2026-02-25T12:13:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T16:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/?p=1157"},"modified":"2026-02-25T12:13:48","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T16:13:48","slug":"france-in-absentia-trial-of-shadow-tankers-captain-to-start-on-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2026\/02\/25\/france-in-absentia-trial-of-shadow-tankers-captain-to-start-on-monday\/","title":{"rendered":"France &#8211; in absentia trial of shadow tanker&#8217;s captain to start on Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Further to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2025\/10\/06\/france-seizure-of-russian-shadow-fleet-vessel-and-arrest-of-captain\/\">our earlier post<\/a> on the French seizure of the &#8220;shadow fleet&#8221; tanker &#8220;Boracay&#8221; off western France in September 2025, it is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/international\/20260223-french-court-to-consider-jurisdiction-over-captain-of-russia-shadow-fleet-tanker\">being reported<\/a> that the trial of the captain is due to commence on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial is taking place <em>in absentia<\/em>, with the captain Chen Zhangjie &#8211; a Chinese national &#8211; not attending the trial in the town of Brest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charges allege that the Captain refused to comply with a lawful order from the French Navy to allow the inspection of the vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Zhangjie is represented in the trial, and it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnews.fr\/france\/2026-02-23\/petrolier-russe-intercepte-par-la-marine-francaise-le-commandant-de-bord-de\">being reported<\/a> that the defence will include arguments that French law and French jurisdiction do not apply.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Further to our earlier post on the French seizure of the &#8220;shadow fleet&#8221; tanker &#8220;Boracay&#8221; off western France in September 2025, it is now being reported that the trial of the captain is due to commence on Monday.
