To mark the occasion we are publishing some graphs on the current state of enforcement across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Fines<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first graph shows (in blue columns) the annual values (in euros) of fines\/confiscations\/penalties\/forfeitures for sanctions breaches across Europe from 2017 to 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The green line is the number of fines in any given year valued at \u20ac1 million or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/09\/image-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"659\" height=\"364\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/09\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/09\/image-1.png 659w, https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/09\/image-1-300x166.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With nearly four months to go 2026 is at \u20ac115.3m and is on track to surpass both 2024 and 2019 in terms of total value (and 2019 had a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2019\/04\/09\/uk-fca-imposes-fine-of-102m\/\">single fine of \u00a3102m<\/a> from the UK&#8217;s FCA). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the graph also illustrates is that while 2018-2020 had a small number of very large fines, countries across Europe are now imposing a much higher number of significant fines than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jail terms<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next graph is another way of showing the sea change in enforcement outcomes since 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/09\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"627\" height=\"463\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/09\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/09\/image.png 627w, https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/09\/image-300x222.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the last three years over 175 years of jail time (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not<\/span> including suspended sentences) have been handed down. The adoption and implementation of the EU&#8217;s harmonization directive, is only going to reinforce and further drive this trend as more member states take on the power to impose a custodial sentence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was only in March that the blog passed the milestone of 700 posts, and now it is at 800.
