{"id":1358,"date":"2026-09-15T09:45:54","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T13:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/?p=1358"},"modified":"2026-09-15T09:45:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T13:45:56","slug":"norway-investigation-into-possible-breaches-of-myanmar-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2026\/09\/15\/norway-investigation-into-possible-breaches-of-myanmar-sanctions\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway &#8211; investigation into possible breaches of Myanmar sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Norwegian company Telenor ASA has issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telenor.com\/media\/newsroom\/press-releases\/investigation-and-charges-in-the-myanmar-case\/\">press release<\/a> confirming that it is the subject of an ongoing investigation by Norwegian authorities into suspected breaches of sanctions against Myanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The press release notes a police search took place earlier today at the company&#8217;s premises and that there has been an ongoing dialogue with the authorities &#8220;for a long time&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The press release also quotes the company&#8217;s Media Relations Director as saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our employees risked imprisonment, torture or the death penalty if the military authorities&#8217; orders were not complied with. This was a very demanding situation in which we found that we had no real choice and that we could not put our employees&#8217; lives at risk&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politiet.no\/nyheter-og-presse\/kripos\/nyhet\/2026-09-15\/pressemelding\">press release from Norway&#8217;s National Criminal Investigation Service<\/a> confirms that the company has been charged both with sanctions offences and human rights related offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation relates to the period before the sale of Telenor&#8217;s operating subsidiary in Myanmar in 2022 and relates to both the transfer of &#8220;historical traffic data on customers&#8221; and &#8220;sanctioned surveillance equipment&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Norwegian company Telenor ASA has issued a press release confirming that it is the subject of an ongoing investigation by Norwegian authorities into suspected breaches of sanctions against Myanmar.
