{"id":841,"date":"2025-01-28T06:29:09","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T10:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/?p=841"},"modified":"2025-01-28T06:29:11","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T10:29:11","slug":"united-kingdom-ofsi-reveals-706-russian-sanctions-investigations-opened-since-february-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2025\/01\/28\/united-kingdom-ofsi-reveals-706-russian-sanctions-investigations-opened-since-february-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"United Kingdom &#8211; OFSI reveals 706 Russian sanctions investigations opened since February 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As first brought to wider attention by the <em>Global Sanctions<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/globalsanctions.com\/2025\/01\/uk-has-318-open-investigations-into-breaches-of-russia-sanctions\/\">site<\/a>, the UK&#8217;s Economic Secretary has <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2025-01-17\/24637\">provided a written answer<\/a> on the UK Parliament&#8217;s website to the question: &#8220;<em>how many investigations by the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation into breaches of Russian sanctions (a) are open and (b) have been undertaken since February 2022<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer stated that 388 cases have been investigated by OFSI and closed since February 2022, and that 318 investigations are currently open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a total of 706 investigations opened by OFSI into potential or alleged Russian sanctions breaches in the UK since February 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that time OFSI has imposed two fines (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2022\/09\/27\/uks-ofsi-imposes-eu-russian-sanctions-civil-penalty\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2024\/09\/27\/uk-ofsi-imposes-15000-civil-penalty\/\">here<\/a>) in relation to Russian sanctions and disclosed one other breach by Wise Payments Limited (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2023\/08\/31\/uks-ofsi-enforces-and-gives-wise-words-of-compliance-advice\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that 385 of OFSI&#8217;s opened Russian investigations since February 2022 were closed without further action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/europeansanctionsenforcement\/2023\/12\/12\/uk-ofsis-enforcement-statistics-for-2022-23\/\">April 2023, OFSI was reporting<\/a> it had 172 lives cases ongoing, indicating that there has been a significant increase since then.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As first brought to wider attention by the Global Sanctions site, the UK&#8217;s Economic Secretary has provided a written answer on the UK Parliament&#8217;s website to the question: &#8220;how many investigations by the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation into breaches of Russian sanctions (a) are open and (b) have been undertaken since February 2022&#8220;.
