{"id":162,"date":"2019-09-03T10:17:30","date_gmt":"2019-09-03T14:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/lifescienceslaw\/?p=162"},"modified":"2019-09-03T10:17:30","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T14:17:30","slug":"dea-announcement-on-improving-access-to-marijuana-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.duanemorris.com\/lifescienceslaw\/2019\/09\/03\/dea-announcement-on-improving-access-to-marijuana-research\/","title":{"rendered":"DEA Announcement on Improving Access to Marijuana Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On August 26, 2019, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) issued a\u00a0<a title=\"DEA announces steps necessary to improve access to marijuana research\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/press-releases\/2019\/08\/26\/dea-announces-steps-necessary-improve-access-marijuana-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>\u00a0announcing \u201cit is moving forward to facilitate and expand scientific and medical research for marijuana in the United States.\u201d This announcement comes in the midst of a growing demand for marijuana for medical and scientific research. Several years ago, in an August 11, 2016,\u00a0<a title=\"DEA Announces Actions Related To Marijuana And Industrial Hemp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/press-releases\/2016\/08\/11\/dea-announces-actions-related-marijuana-and-industrial-hemp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>, DEA first announced its intention to \u201cexpand\u2026 the number of DEA-registered marijuana manufacturers\u201d because \u201conly one entity was authorized to produce marijuana to supply researchers in the United States: the University of Mississippi.\u201d Since that announcement, 33 entities have applied to DEA for a marijuana manufacturer registration. However, the approval process was stalled during Attorney General Jeff Sessions\u2019 term in office, and to date no new applications have been approved. Meanwhile, the number of entities registered by DEA to conduct research on marijuana, marijuana extracts or marijuana derivatives has jumped from 384 in January 2017 to 542 in January 2019.
