Lawmakers attempted to pass a similar law last year that was designed to give franchisees more protection, but it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/political\/la-me-pc-gov-brown-vetoes-bill-to-protect-franchise-firms-20140929-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>vetoed by the Governor<\/u><\/a>. This time, it passed.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Chris Holden (D-Pasadena), co-author of the bill, <a href=\"http:\/\/asmdc.org\/members\/a41\/news-room\/press-releases\/assemblymember-holden-s-franchise-bill-of-rights-scores-big-win-in-california-assembly-vote-ab-525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>said in a statement<\/u><\/a> \u201cAs a former small business franchise owner, I can tell you that the one-sided nature of a franchise relationship quickly becomes apparent after signing these documents.\u201d He said that without this new law, \u201cit\u2019s easy for a company to get rid of a franchisee whether they\u2019ve done anything wrong or not. These small business owners invest substantial time and money into the enterprise and deserve to be protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201520160AB525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>new law<\/u><\/a> amends the California Franchise Relations Act, and makes it more difficult for large franchisors to terminate franchise agreements with small restaurant owners. It also gives franchisees 60 days to correct violations of franchise agreements, up from only 30 days previously. It also adds more detailed provisions about exactly how franchises can be terminated or transferred.<\/p>\n<p>Both large franchisors and small franchisees should be aware of these changes and how they may affect existing franchise agreements. The new law goes into effect on January 1, 2016.
